Kz 400 starter not working

I am recommissioning a 1974 Kz 400 I have recently bought it has 10k Miles on the clock its from the USA and I thought it was from California but I found a document under the seat that it is from Washington, after I put a battery on it and managed to get it so it didn't blow the fuse, pressed the starter button the starter motor span but it didnt turn the engine over, no problem its got a kick start I will use that and fix the starter at a later date, so after I had cleaned and put new Orings in the carbs, I put some petrol in it and gave it a couple of kicks, it was at this moment I realised that my recent right hip replacement was not going to let me kick it over, so I took the cover off the alternator and tried the starter it span the alternator rotor which was confusing as it still didn't turn the engine over, was the crank broken? No the bolt in the centre was finger tight and the rotor was spinning on the taper, I don't think its caused any damage

It is it was a bit annoying as I had bought an extractor which I didnt get to use but I have it for the future! I dont know what Kawasaki use to seal the gaskets but its very difficult to get off they could have just used that and not bothered with the screws

You need to maintain a "glass half full" mindset with these old bikes or they'll never get finished (ask me how I know)

I am starting to put the starter and the altenator back together, should the rotor be magnetic? this one isnt and I am guessing it should be

Thinking about this a bit more, this altenator has seperate field coils that sit statically in the middle of the rotor so is it them which provides the magnetic field for the altenator to work ???

The magnetic field is created by the field coil when the ignition is on (later bikes without the field coil have "permanent magnet" rotors)
