Gauge restoration
05 Apr 2025 09:28 - 05 Apr 2025 09:30
Can anyone suggest someone to restore my KZ650 B1 gauges? I have been in contact with zresto but it appears they are no longer working on them. I’ve attempted to work on gauges in the past and it hasn’t turned out well. Thanks

Thanks for the Kudos fellas! Can't believe ZResto won't be working on these anymore?? Limitfish, yes i can help you with what you need. Do you still have the original ones intact? The early KZ650 B1's were unique in a couple aspects. They had a black inner can instead of green and the lens glass was concave. Send me a photo of what you have here on the forum please. Often times they were changed out because of wrecks or misbehaving over the almost 50yrs.

Clay, your detailed knowledge of the "Z", per example, in terms of instruments and handlebar switches, is great and deserves full respect!
Alway great to read about this special differences and details!

Well Thank-You Joe!! Actually just a byproduct of curiosity and being around soo many different bikes over the years. And a Nice reprieve from working on greasy engines, ha! Limit also if you choose to do these, note the illumination (X2 per gauge) bulb bayonet holding rubber sleeves! They are all too often hard as a rock and bits of the rubber will fall back into the gauge. They came in two basic styles. Early assemblies were separate from the wiring sub harness and merely plugged into it. Starting in around 1976 they were all one assembly. Note first two photos. Last photo is for you Joe. I make replacements for the sagging gauge needles for the KZ1300. Still don't know the upside of a lathe though, haha.

As far as I can see, Clay, you've been doing perfectly well without a lathe so far.. ;-)Sure, it's sometimes good to have a lathe, especially if, like me, you have to make money with it...
(I have a second, small, cheap, and simple lathe right in my bike garage, so I can quickly shorten a screw or make a bushing for the motorcycles without having to drive to my workshop...( As i´ve seen on the pictures by wookie58, its the same china-type-lathe, i´ve just change the original Ø 80 mm chuck to a Ø 100 mm chuck,..and for little works it is well so far..)

Haha,... it's like wishing something into your right hand and shitting in your left... and seeing what happens...
No, seriously: Clay, You're talented enough!!! Go ahead with your fine work!
(( The "larger" lathe is a good precision lathe, still very precise despite its age, and with a very extensive range of accessories: 3 and 4-jaw chucks, collets from 1-20 mm, cross and longitudinal feeds...but mostly too small with a maximum diameter of 130 mm and a machining center distance of 400 mm...but I wouldn't have much desire to machine super-large diameters anyway....)
