Regulator/Rectifier

82 kz550 with SH230-12 R/R?

Question: what should be fused?

the sense wire (brown) will have a 5a fuse

And the red/white constant 12v wire. Should this be fused? The wiring diagram doesn't show one but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Would a 20 or 25 amp fuse be okay here or is that too much/too little?

Thanks.

A 25 or 30 amp fuse on the red/white would be fine (later models have this from factory)

Thanks! Now for a follow up.. should the switched hot for the IC igniter  be fused as well and if so what amp fuse?

What are you planning to put on each of the fuses ?

What do you mean by "put on the fuses" ?

with this being the first wiring harness I've made to this extent I want to play it safe and make sure everything that should be fused is fused. As far as what I was initially asking: Of those components listed (and any others that come to mind) what should be fused and what amperage?

I will not attempt to put words into Wookie's mouth so to speak, as I have no problem saying he knows more than me on this issue (electronic) but I think he is asking what all systems are you intending to put individually on fuses? At least that is how I read his post. Not saying it is the best system ever invented, but the stock system and it's fuses appeared to work well for many many years as long as the components still work as intended. I am not convinced a fuse on each system is required. But what do I know?

Maybe the better question would be what should be ran off of the same fuse? I have a solenoid with a 30A main fuse and switched power going to a 4 bank fuse box. Given that, what systems would you recommend I run off of each of the 4 fuses and to what amperage?

going this route would it be safe to say wire my headlight, tail light, signal lights, etc. off of the same fuse? Amperage of fuse would just be the sum of the Amperage of the lights. But this brings the concern of blowing that fuse and losing all lights. I could run the respective lights each off of their own fuse from my fuse block and use inline fuses elsewhere (space concerns from the electronics tray I made).

Once more thanks for the help!

The below should work for you, I have included a table ref cable sizes you should be using and a couple of options for fuse allocation. You don't need to fuse each individual circuit (the factory made do with 2 or 3) remember the more complex you make the more opportunity you create for corrosion related problems

This is great! Thanks a ton. My last question for now would be this: My solenoid has a 30A main fuse with 2 red wire (+12V) and a green and blue (to activate solenoid to engage starter motor). If I use the 2 red leads, one for the ignition key suppling 12v to the rest of the electronics and the other red lead to give the Regulator/Rectifier its constant 12 V supply, will this 30A main fuse be sufficient enough? Or should I wire an inline 25A fuse between the solenoid 12v output and the regulator and an additional 25 A fuse inline with the Solenoid 12v output and the wire giving power to the key
