Referencing the parts catalog I have (see photo) they both use the same bars and internal wiring. This parts catalog covers the B1-B2 bikes. The way it’s laid out is, if there is a difference between the models, for example the carbs then there is two separate breakdown diagrams. If the models use the same parts only one breakdown is shown. I only find one page referencing the controls and bars.

Look at your handlebars.  Is there a hole for the wires?

I'm going on memory but I think my 1980 KZ1000 LTD is outside wiring.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

My 77' KZ 1000 LTD came with internal wiring. My uncle never changed the bars.

I did a 650 one wire at a time.  I used a lead wire taped to the actual bike wire.

I find MIG wire from my welder works pretty good for fishing cables and hoses (flexible enough to turn the bends but stiff enough to be able to give it a "shove")

I finally got a chance to check my LTD and the control wiring is outside the bars.  There are actually two per side.  One is for the control and the other is for the bar mounted signal light.

I bought this bike in 2014 or 15 for $750 from a guy who used it as a spare parts bike.  I rebuilt it and now that I think about it I may have put new bars on it.  Unfortunately I've deleted all my old photos of when I bought it.

Nowadays the bike has a '78 head, a Z1 air intake and a set of KZ900 carbs.  Runs well but it's been sleeping for the last two summers while I ride my Goldwing with a sidecar to carry our dogs around.

HRM, you should have 3 visible harness/wires on the LH side. 1-hand control, 2- bar mounted signal, 3-clutch interlock.

I'll check but I don't. think I have a clutch interlock.  Damn!  Wish I hadn't deleted my old photos!

Edited to add that I checked Partzilla and it appears 77/78 was internal wiring but 79/80 was external for some reason.  77/78 have a beefed up section in the center of the bars and the controls are all individual wires, but 79/80 doesn't have the beefed up section and the left control looks to have a plug.

Hello so for some peoples they are inside or outside.
I have here 2 kz1000.
One 77 ltd and one 78 ltd. I have 2 ltd handlebars and one is factory drilled on the center. The other one is not...
They are supposed to be oem handlebars for those bikes...

The topic of "model year" vs "registration year" has come up many times. If your 78 was built after July 1978 it will be a 79 model year   vehicle manufacturers set up for the next model year during summer shut down.
