That photo tells me that there isn't a standard hookup.  If the negative is installed as shown I'm pretty. sure it wouldn't reach the ground point.  The cable isn't long enough.

That’s out of the owners manual, the assembly manual show basically the same! I can’t get the assembly manual pic to post. I just took a photo of my owners manual. The pictures you show looks similar to the 1979 kz1000 service manual. The part you can’t see on all pics is were the problem is. With the air box installed there are three options all are tight. Cable came today so going to pic one and call it good. Thanks to all that post!l

The airbox fitment was the reason I switched to a Z1 air intake.  There is nothing over top of my battery.

Edited to add that I realize you are trying to make your bike completely stock.  Mine is a long way from it.  I have a '78 head, and '76 carbs among other non-stock items.

This is how I ended up. Got this cable(supposedly a n.o.s. Ltd cable) it has the Kawasaki wire and had no marks on either end from being bolted up. But is 12” long, which is longer than other new ones I have seen advertised next to a tape measure. There is one on evil bay now that is off a Ltd that looks to be a different length than either. I am going with the one I have and call it good. It fit by going off battery like the owners manual pic , under the bracket that holds the battery box, between the bolts that hold the master cylinder than to motor!                                                   I have restored cars and built race cars (need pictures?lol)and race cars are a lot less frustrating.lol                                          Pics of my next project, my owned since new 1975 kx 125. Cool, the tank and seat look like new. My current project is a 78' KL 250 for the boy to learn on. It has 15k miles on it but sat in the PO's dining room for 16 years after his divorce. It's a little rough, okay a lot rough but pretty much all there. It's got plenty of compression but a ton of stuff to sort out. It was ridden but not maintained much. What was done was sub standard.

The seat and tank are done, now the hard work starts,,right?                                     My kids are grown, so I guess my excuse is a bit of a midlife crisis! Ha.                   Your bike looks like a great all there bike which is getting harder to find.. Glad to see people out there that want to put there kid on a bike instead of on a couch pushing buttons looking at a bike on a screen!! Sorry got off topic..
