Out for a ride my z1 900 today after about 45 minutes  bike lost power felt like it dropped 2 cylinders let sit for 10 minutes started ran good possible  bad could or points problem should I upgrade ignition

Are you running original coils?  If so, they should measure about 3.8 ohms on the primary side and about 13,000 ohms from plug wire to plug wire.  

Most Z1 riders upgraded to a Dyna S2 system.  That would be the green Dyna coils and the recommended pickup for a Z1.  Just guessing at the cost, but around $250.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Go with a new dyna ignition and green coils and never need to adjust points again.  It was one of the best upgrades I did to my bike (many years ago).
