81 KZ1000J

Hi all, I have an ‘81 KZ1000J with Dyna ignition. I have a weird problem this year . My battery has been load tested and is good. When I put in bike and try to start it, it turns over for a bit (bike is typically hard starting at beginning of year) and then all of a sudden I lose all power. Bike goes dark. Nothing no power. Could this be a starter relay? Fuses are good. Or could it be a bad starter?  Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Sounds like, and this is a very rough guess, like a loose connection(s).

Tighten both your battery connections.
Follow the the main ground from the battery. Tighten where it goes to the frame.
Follow the thick positive cable to the starter solenoid. Tighten those connections. Be careful not to touch ground while you are tightening those connections.

If this doesn't fix your issue then we can do some testing with a voltmeter.

I think you were right . Loose +connection - which is very odd. However I also think I have a timing issue.

Battery load testing says nothing. A weak battery can show fully loaded volts on a battery tender but failed and drop the voltage down to zero under heavy load ampere consumtion like e-start!

Load testing puts a heavy load on the battery, similar to starting.

You say the bike goes dark?  That is, you have no lights on the dash, no headlight, nothing?  And then what?  Does it come back?  Is there any way you can get the dash lights to come back on?  Do you have to remove the battery?  Do you have to charge the battery?

I think the answer to these questions will help, but my first guess is that you have a bad ground connection.
