Loss of all power

So I was riding my 82 kz440 this morning and when I went to take off from a stoplight I lost all electrical power. Last week I blew the main fuse so I replaced it. I checked that this morning and put a new one in for safe measure. Still no power. Any advice?

Check battery terminals and grounds (engine and chassis)

Also make sure the battery is fully charged and have it load tested. Battery stores and many auto parts stores will do it for free. A dead cell can act the way you describe.

Agree that the battery is the first thing to check.  In my experience the other likely things to look at are the fuse box and the keyed switch.  Do you have a VOM or test lite to help you find the issue?

In the past the solder joint on the keyed switch on my 650 that brought power to the switch broke on the switch and I lost all power.

Load testing is necessary when a battery is suspect.

We've seen many batteries that will show ~12 VDC no-load on a multimeter, but will not pass any significant current, dropping to near 0VDC under load.

Turns out the battery was shot. I find that odd though because the battery is only a year old...what would cause a battery to go bad that quickly?

Scorpion by chance?… I had a battery in a mid 80’s f-150 die. No indication it was going bad. Pulled into a party store. When a went to start to leave nothing. Completely dead. It’s an electrical item it can fail at any point without reason.

has it had periods of being fully discharged then "boost charged" or "jump started" to get it back to life ?

The last 2 lead acid batteries I had lasted barely a year each. One was a generic Canadian Tire brand and the other a Yuasa which surprised me. I guess they dont make them like the used to.

It´s easy to boil out dry a new battery if the voltage regulator is going over his voltage loading limit.

It had a dead cell in the battery. Bought a new battery and she runs like a dream!
