Hello everyone!

I have a stupid question which I’m hoping someone can answer..

but first some background info,
I’m about to start hardtailing/bobbing my 84?? zn750 ltd. I’m wanting to simplify the wiring and clean it all up with the M.unit blue and motogadget switches.
I mostly understand the wiring until I get the the ignition system.
my question is..

Can anyone explain the wiring between the M.unit and the coils?
do I have a contact breaker or an ignition control module of sorts, and how do I wire that together to make sure I get a spark at the correct time?

Thanks in advance

Jai

Pretty easy.... just run a wire from the "ignition" output on the m-unit to the positive terminal on your coil(s).
The coil negative wire will go to the contact breaker.

I'm not sure about your wiring if you use an electronic ignition module.

I was wondering if this has solved your problems. I run an M-unit blue on a kz1100 with an IC igniter. If you would like I can share my wiring diagram...
1982 KZ1100A (shaft). Customized bike. Runs K&N airpods, stepped up carbs. Rebuilt wiring harness and an M-unit blue. Led lighting, Mosfet reg-rec, li-fe battery, new controls, home built saddle and fully new paint job. All this took me a few years... :-)

By 1984, all Kawasaki street bikes bigger than 100cc had electronic ignition, not breaker points.

One thing I would add is that personally I would only feed the coils from the "ign" output. Anything else that doesn't have a specific output on the M-unit I would feed from one of the "aux" ports. The reason for this is the coils alone can draw close to the 10 amp rating of the M-unit output and given the cost of these unit's I wouldn't want to risk overloading it (even though it has built in protection) The below calculation shows the current draw of the coils and as you can see with coils that are close to 3 ohms resistance the draw is 9 amps. This is of course only IMHO

Hi all,

sorry for the absence unfortunately my fiancée died at the beginning of June at the age of 33, so as you can all imagine the build has taken a back seat.
Yeah my 750 is breaker point but any wiring diagrams you have would still be fantastic as the more I learn the more I know.

kindest regards,

Jai

Sorry to hear that Jai, devastating for sure. We all love our bikes but there is "a time and a place" and you need to get your priorities right. Any support you need with electrics etc (or anything else) we are here to help.

I am very sorry for your loss.

When you are up to it, would you mind posting the engine number? I am curious because I am not aware of any KZ750 four cylinder engine that came with breaker points. Maybe I am ignorant, or maybe there is a mystery here.

Hi Tex,

sorry I misread your reply.
I have an ic ignition box and I’m guessing there’s sensors on the crank?

cheers,
Jai
