I bought and installed a new reproduction right hand controls for my kz900. The blue wire connectors from the controls are a little different from the originals and do not directly connect. Anyone else have experience with how to properly hook this up? Currently have no functioning headlight but this might be unrelated. 

 

 

Plug the two male connectors into female connector.
 

Try connecting that blue male to the blue double female.  Then take the blue male from your left control and connect to the blue double female on the right control.

By the way...that control is for a Z1, not a KZ.  There should not be any "ON-PO-OFF" on a KZ.  But it will still work.

Thanks, I will try that out. It was advertised as for a Z1 or KZ. What do the blue wires even do?

Not exactly true. My 1977 KZ650-C1 came new with the ON OFF switch.  It was somewhat later (1978?) that the headlights came on automatically when the ignition was turned on.  Ed

 

What do the blue wires even do?

hi, switched lighting or unswitched? if unswitched, in your old switch wiring under the sleeve, they spliced brown. (12v feed) to blue/white and brown/white, to return to fuses for lighting, the blue wire are switch legs from light switch (ring out), what did you do with the 4 pin connector on new switch?  remove and splice direct?  brown feeds ignition and lighting,   single blue is feed for light switch, some how splice to brown, (bullet connectors are best), plug blue/white and brown white into double blue, which,, will feed lighting fuses, good luck

I suppose it depend on the original market.  Here in Canada the change was in 1975.  I had a Z1B back then with no lettering.  US market may have been different.

The original right hand KZ900 controls were switched unless someone at some point swapped it from a Z1? Also thanks for the wiring advice, I was able to get the headlight to turn on by experimenting with the blue wires. The headlight is not all that bright but the engine was not running. Maybe brighter then? Also the flashers and hazards dont work so I need to replace the relays for those. Also the turn signal indicator lamps to not seem to work. Do I even need these?



 

I have two Z1Bs (1975).  One was built in Sept/74 with a RH control like the one you removed.  The other was built in Jan/75 with the control in the photo below.  If you look carefully you will see a tiny piece of plastic across the slit between the two halves of the control.  I also owned a Z1B back in the day with a control like the second one.

Just a guess, but I suspect the US market didn't require the headlight to be on all the time until a later year.  In Canada it was 1975.

Unless the internal switchboards are broken or completely trashed, that can very likely be restored.
