Hi,
can anyone solve my headache of a problem. On my z750e I seem to have no spark from no.1 and no.4 plugs.
What I've done so far:
New coils
ic ignitor
new plugs
new HT leads
New spark plug caps
Renewed all the wires and connectors from the ic ignitor to the coils.
Anyone have any ideas please.

1 and 4 fire off the same coil.  On my bikes it's the left one.  If it's a new coil you should check your leads to ensure they are hooked up.  If still no spark then check the coil resistance on both primary and secondary sides.  If the coil tests OK then the problem is likely in your ignition.  It could be in the exciter or in the pickup.

Thanks Hardrockminer

Sorry, what do you mean check coil resistance on primary and secondary?

Tried another ignitor but no change.
pick ups had a loose wire but I did solder it.
every now and then it fires fine but then runs rough again

He means to test each coil on both circuits. The primary side is the low voltage part of the coil. The small wires from the igniter attach to the primary posts. The secondary part of the coil is the high voltage side that connects to the spark plugs. The factory service manual has the specifications for both.

Thanks Texaskz

I've put new coils on as stated in my original post and still no spark so assuming they are fine. I've also tried another ignitor, second hand obviously but surely that wouldn't be faulty as well on 1 & 4.
Do you think i still need to test them?

Thanks for all your help, much appreciated

A quick test is to swap primary wires from 2-3 to 1-4. If 1-4 spark then it’s not the coil. Testing coils resistance is easy and quick if you have a multi meter.

EDIT. id Recommend pulling all plugs and firmly grounding all 4 to the engine. Less stress on the starter and you can visually see the spark. Easier done in a dark garage or at night

You could have a bad pickup.
If you do Mikaw's test of switching primary leads, it will fire 1 and 4 with a bad pickup.
Lou may drop by to help with your testing of the pickups.

Apologies for not being more descriptive about testing coils.

I agree with F64.  I had an intermittent problem in my pickup on my KZ1000.  I eventually replaced the pickup and the exciter.

Hi, after more investigations I am 99.9% sure it is the pick up coils. The wire on the right hand side of pick ups was holding on by 3 strands of wires. It broke off when I was inspecting it. I had to cut into the plastic casing to expose more wires to get a good join. I soldered the wires together as good as I could (not perfect) but still no spark on 1 & 4.

Is there a pick up coil from another model that fits the 1980/81 z750E or any idea of a good fix. The only one I can find is in Washington USA.
Thanks

Look here, it will give you the OEM part number, that’s helpful when searching. I’m not sure I trust Partzilla for cross referencing any more but you can search the other models and look to see if the part is the same.
