Hello riders, Im in proces of modification of my KZ 1000 st shaft 79, i change all the electrical sistem to a New and moder one with m-unit blue, stator, regulator , solenoid are from ricks electronics , and is the second time that the motorcycle melt the coils , do i have to use a resistor? Please any help i will apreciated!

I would make sure the coil primary power is actually getting turned off with the new M-Unit. If they are getting consistent power they will burn out

Hello Pichu, I am sure the 79 KZ1000 models used a ballast resister with 2 ohm coils. Without the resistor your coils see too much current. This heats them up and destroys them.

You have two choices.

1) Install a ballast resistor
2) Install a Dyna S ignition system and replace your coils with 4 ohm ones. If you buy them from Dyna you should get the green ones.

The Dyna S should connect directly to the green coils. Is that what you did?

Last summer I put a Dyna S with green coils on my 1980 KZ1000 LTD. I removed the exciter completely and hooked the Dyna S pickup directly to the coils.

With your bike turned off.
Use your voltmeter.
Set voltmeter to DC V
Put your black meter probe on negative part of battery.
Put your red meter probe on the positive part of battery.

Move your red meter probe to each coil terminal.
What are your voltage readings?

Start your motorcycle
Take the voltage readings again.
What are your voltage readings?
