Have a 1979 KZ650C.....Bike did not have Coils and Spark Plug Wires came in a box, but I did buy the Dyna Dual output 3.0 ohm Coils.

**I see other bikes have a Nylon Tube(cut to length) to put on Dyna Coils. What would be the length of the Nylon Tube?
**As for the Spark Plug Wires. Which one goes where?
**What type of Battery to use? Read the $50 ones are fine...zero problems. Others say Lithium Battery ONLY
**NGK B7ES are the ones to get?
**OIL(have read tons on this), but some say MINERAL OIL(JASO-MA) ONLY, others....Synthetic ONLY and so on. Thinking it would be safe to use
Bel-Ray 20w-40 or 10w-40 Mineral(live in Central East Coast of Florida...hot all the time).but do see the BEL-RAY
EXS Full-Synthetic Ester 4T Engine Oil . Easy question (yea right)....which one?
**Oil Filter....one to buy and the one not to buy?
**bike has Mikuni VM24 carbs. What Air Pods are good? And, what size? Do I measure outside or inside of carb for them to fit?

Have read the site for hours and hours and is a GREAT help, but just need a little help with the above.
Thank You!

- I don't know anything about Nylon Tube on coils.

- Copper core wire with resistor type plug caps are standard on KZ bikes. You can use resistor wire without resistor caps, such as Dyna sells, too.

- I recommend an AMG battery. They have better deep cycle capability than a conventional lead acid battery and seem to last longer. Motobatt is what I use but there are others.

- B7ES are good

- My preference is diesel engine oil. 15W-40 mineral oil is fine. Shell Rotella is MA certified but just about any diesel engine oil is fine (most diesel oil manufacturers don't want to spend the money to get MA certification because the motorcycle sales market is soo small.) Synthetic oils last longer between changes and holds up better to extremes heat events but otherwise it doesn't provide any advantage. Some people experience more leakage in old vehicles when using synthetic too. I'm not sure I buy into that but there is too much chatter to this claim to ignore.

- I use either OEM filters or Hiflo. Spending more for a fancy name filter like K&N is unnecessary and doesn't protect your bike any better.

- K&N brand pods are best. They are cleanable and last a long time. Those cheap Emgo and similar jobbies are not cleanable and some people report poor performance when using them. Realize up front that pods drastically change the airflow characteristics so you will have to rejet the carbs. This is not as simple as just bumping the main a couple of sizes. Good luck with that.

Thanks Nessism!!

As for the Nylon Tube's.......I'm talking about attaching the Dyna Coils them self to the bike. Using Nylon Tube's to secure them

In addition to what Nessism said.....
Sometimes on the liter bikes (900/1000,1100) the mounting system requires aftermarket coils to be spaced out a bit. I do not recall reading about that problem on the 650.
The plug wires from one coil go to cylinders 1& 4, the other coil fires 2 & 3. To know for sure which goes where, you will need to look at the color of the - wire for each coil. I do not remember the colors on the 650, but you can find out in the factory service manual. Look under the Articles tab on this website for the service manuals link. Be sure to get the one that covers your exact year and model, as there were significant changes to the 650 during its production run.
I suspect one of the 650 experts will be along soonly with the information, but you really need the manual, too.

Wiring. RH coil >> 1-4 spark plug wires, black wire & yellow-red or red power wire. LH coil >> 2-3 plug wires, green wire & yellow-red or red. My power wires are red. A 70s KZ650 should be yellow-red.

Battery. I'm currently using a Scorpion AGM from batterystuff.com & I keep a smart charger connected when not riding. Yuasa doesn't seem to make an agm for my motorcycle. For a regular wet-cell the fluid level is difficult to ascertain in the walmart batteries.

Engine oil. To save money Shell Rotella 15W-40 regular in the white bottle. or Chevron Delo or any other oil marketed for diesel engine use & having ZDDP or equivalent. An Emgo oil filter is fine. Z1Enterprises.com.

Coil mounting. Some guys use L-brackets from the hardware store. I made brackets from 1-1/2 x 1-1/2" aluminum bar (see pic).

Just an FYI. It really doesn't matter what side the coils are on, just so long as all the wires are connected correctly. But for simplicity's sake, I would do it as above since that's how most if not all 650s & 750-4s are done. I think the 1000s are done the opposite. The scorpion agm batteries aren't lasting as long as they did in the past, so that's why I keep it on the smart charger (Ctek US 0.8 & I use a VC97 digital multimeter). Also, Shell Rotella has the JASO-MA rating. Other similar brands just didn't go to the trouble to get the rating.
