Dyna green coils
08 Sep 2020 12:44
I have on my Z1B the electronic ignition from a Z1000J, it works but the coils are 40 years old. Is it possible to change the old coils for the green Dyna coils ? Or will that kill the electronic ignition?

Assuming the old coils are for the points ignition (4 ohm), then the Dynas coils would be more suitable. The green 3.0 ohm coils should work fine, but I think the gray 2.2 ohm are a better match for the stock electronic ignition. I went with the green on my 81 KZ650-CSR w stock electronic ignition, in case I have to switch to the Dyna S.

If your coils are originals they are 3.8 ohm. The green coils are a match for originals.
But I'm wondering if your electronic ignition is a match for 3.8 ohm coils? The electronic pickup off my 1980 KZ1000 LTD used an exciter and 2 ohm coils with a ballast resistor. I switched it out about a month ago and installed a Dyna S ignition with the green coils. I eliminated the old pickup along with the exciter, old coils and ballast resistor.

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

The electronic ignitions work well with 3 ohm coils as long as you don't have super high compression or turbos etc.

I measured the primary resistant and one coil is 2.8 and the other one is 2.6 Ohms so mu only concern was to blow up my electronic ignition.
Thanks for the replys, I am gonnah instal the 3 Ohms green coils
