Starting Issues kz1000 Police was created by indidallasite
Hello kzriders,
I recently acquired a 1988 kz1000 police, I have been riding motorcycles for a long time but I have never restored one. I wanted to try it and thats how I ended up buying this motorcycle. As you can imagine the motorycle at this point doesn't start, it seems to have issues with wiring. My first preference before spending any money on the rest of the repairs was to get the engine started. However I wanted to make sure everything inside the engine looks good. So I removed it from the frame and it looks clean inside which is a relief. I have been trying to start it off of the frame but I have tough time figuring out the electricals. I can get it to crank but I am sure the spark plugs don't fire as expected. Here I will try to explain how I am connecting the electricals.

1. I am connecting the battery directly to the starter - positive of the battery to the cable that goes to the started relay. Negative to the battery. This cranks the engine as expected.
2. For coils, I have tried connecting the coil inlets from the original harness but they don't have any output there. So I am directly connecting the positives to the battery and negatives of the coil to ground and then negative of battery.
3. 4 pin connector from plates to IC Igniter.

What I have observed is I don't see any output at the 6 pin connector (white) that connects to the Igniter, how do I make sure Igniter is working as expected. Am I missing something? Any help is really appreciated. Attaching some pictures for reference, please note I am a newbie at this and just trying to learn something.

Also attached images from Ohms test on coils and male lead (4 pin connector) from pickup that goes to Igniter.

I'm not entirely sure this is a good idea.
I don't accept any responsibility for the outcome.
Oh well, make sure to video the process.
The wires you need to focus on are the ones coming out of the igniter.
The red wires go to the postive on both coils and to battery 12v +
The black and yellow goes to battery 12v -.
make sure 12v - is on your engine block as well.
Black wire from the igniter goes to your coil negative terminal for cylinders 1 and 4.
Green wire from your igniter goes to your coil negative terminal for cylinders 2 and 3.

your pickups should be connected via the connector between the igniter and the pickups.

fire extiguisher and some common sense.

hit the starter

you will have to disconnect the battery to kill it.

p. s.
move those wires away from the final drive sprocket.

I understand your motive, but your not going to accomplish what you want. Just because an engine will start doesn’t mean it’s problem free. Without exhaust you might not be able to hear a bad bearing, a piston slap, or a stretched cam chain. It won’t run long enough to tell if it’s a good engine. On Another note you won’t be able to test the transmission or the charging system.

This is wrong in so many ways. Please consider putting it back in the frame and don’t attempt this...

Please! Otherwise that engine may dance all over the place and cause damage to it and anything near it! Would you do the same same thing with a car engine? Ed
