Brown wire '77 kz650 custom was created by Steel Legion
Hey guys, new here. I am wiring in a new starter button and kill switch. But I've got this pesky brown wire that looks like it is used in everything. It also looks like it could be a hot wire. But on some parts(like lights) it looks like it is a ground. What the heck does it do? I've attached some photos from the wiring diagram to help explain my point.

The brown wire is positive. So that makes the the other wires connected to the lights the ground side.

Ahh I see. I had just gotten it mixed up because the other lights have a yellow and black going in the location the brown is going in on some other lights and had assumed it was a ground wire. Thanks!

Additionally, the brown wire serves as a voltage sensing wire for the voltage regulator. Some modern reg-recs have the voltage sensing built into the circuitry, so the brown wire isn't needed.

The brown is your 12v positive going INTO the switch. The other wires are your outputs going to your loads.

What does the new switch wiring look like?

This is the new switch, a k&s 12-0203. It has a blue/white and black going to the starter button. Which I have determined that the black connects to the black from the original switch that travels to the clutch safety switch, and then to the starter relay. It has a red/black and a red/white going to the kill switch. I have determined that the red/white connects to the brown wire. Then the blue/white and red/black are connected together and then connected to the red/yellow from the original switch to complete the connection. Does that sound correct?
