Is my new battery now fried ?
22 Jul 2020 18:54
Ordered a new battery for my recent '78 KZ650B and it arrived today. I was excited to finally fire up the bike after purchasing it two weeks ago.
Installed the battery and zero voltage! Connected my intelligent battery charger and after 30 minutes (on a whim) disconnected the battery and pulled it out. Total dry! The dealer neither installed the electrolyte nor supplied it in the box!
Needless to say I will run back tomorrow when they open but a quick google search says that my present battery is finished even if the dealer tops it off ?
Thoughts ?

If it was totally bone dry, without any acid, and never had any, then it should be fine. I can't imagine why it would be damaged. It would act a an open circuit. No current would flow. To confirm: connecting the battery should have produced no effect of any kind... as in there should have been no lights of any kind and no sounds.

I agree with loudhvx. I'm wondering where you found info suggesting the battery would be useless if hooked up without acid?
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

This is a wet cell battery, correct? And it didn't come with an instruction sheet? If you don't know anything about batteries, then you should have at the least asked the dealer what needs to be done.

Somethings not making sense... I can’t recall seeing a battery sold dry that didn’t including the acid...

To my understanding, if you buy a battery on t'interweb, they will send it out dry with the acid seperate in a special dispenser. Probably for safety reasons during delivery.
Also,Im pretty sure the last battery I bought from my local bike shop was dry when he took it off the shelf, then he filled it up for me to take away.
That couldve all been a dream though!!

Same here, in the stores anyway. Some on-line sellers don't include the electrolyte. Z1Enterprises doesn't, at least not for the Yuasa wet cell battery for my motorcycle.

Some batteries are sold online without the acid being included (see www.amazon.com/Yuasa-YUAM2210Y-YB10L-A2-...id=1595523458&sr=8-1 ). That's not a big deal though since one can buy the battery acid at car parts stores. I did this myself and found it not to be a problem at all. Ed

This whole discussion looks like a convincing argument for buying an AGM battery.

Your battery is ok, have dealer fill with acid, trickle charge twelve hours.
Thoughts ?
