So I'm working on this kz650 from 1978 I believe, and like many other bikes the keys are lost. I thought oh yeah that's easy can just order another ignition switch right? Well I guess I must have the only kz650 with a 7 wire ignition switch cause every switch I find online is only the 6 or 4 pin connector. Anyone know where I can find one with the 6 pin connector and the 7th wire?

The motorcycle in the pic appears to be a 650C since it has triple disks. From the wiring diagrams a 78 should have a 6-wire ignition switch, but a 79 should have 7-wires, so your motorcycle might be a 79 model. note: as with most vehicles, the year of mfg isn't necessarily the model year.

You're probably going to have to use a 6-wire ignition switch & reconfigure the wiring a tad. The 1979 KZ650B/C wiring diagram shows a 7-wire ignition switch w 2 white wires. I'm not sure what wire from the harness you wouldn't use, but maybe a white since they're kind of redundant. just a guess. Z1Enterprises.com lists an Emgo 40-80600 ignition switch for the 79 650C, but I couldn't find a connection chart or wiring diagram for it. If you have a multimeter, you could test for continuity between the wires of the Emgo unit when it's turned to ON & to Park to figure out how the wire colors would match up with the ignition switch chart at the bottom of the 650 wiring diagram. White, red & brown probably match up, so you'd only need to figure out the other 3. I guess it shouldn't be too hard.

Please help me to understand how one can own a bike and not know what model year it is? Please don't think I'm being disrespectful - I'm not. I ask because you definitely are not the first person to not know this crucial information, so I am trying to understand why there is this confusion. It is very obvious to me by glancing at the photo that the bike is a 1979 KZ650-C3 (NOT 1978 - KZ650-C2), so what was it about the bike that made you suspect is a 1978? One other question - do you have a title for that bike and doesn't that show what model the bike is? Thanks. Ed
