Modern Tacho & Speed meter was created by gordone
What different type of modern tacho & speedo meter is out there?

1. Proximity switch based on wheel movement and pulse pickup sensor on the coil cable ?
Positive: you will get speed also in tunnels.
Negative: proximity switch on the swing arm

2. GPS tracking for speed
Positive: no exstra cabling or sensors
Negative: missing speed when bad GPS signals, example in tunnels.

3. others?

I`m planing to rebuild the eltrical wiring include the speed and tacho meter.

It would take some doing, but you might be able to get a sensor to very closely detect the teeth of the front sprocket. I don't think it exists as a commercial product, but it probably wouldn't be too hard to make a mounting plate and find a prox sensor to fit. Then a standard speedo using a prox input should work as long as you can set it to detect 16 pulses and calculate the speed based on the sprocket and tire combo.

GPS speedometers do have extra wiring - the antenna, There is usually a "box" on the wire that is the GPS receiver, that needs to be in the open view of the sky in order to get the signal. On a car this is not a big deal. On a motorcycle there aren't many places to achieve that.

I am using a front end off a Honda CBR600RR. I no longer have the cable drive on the front wheel since the Honda used an electronic sensor off the motor. So I cannot use either the Kawasaki Speedo, or the Honda. The only viable option, in my opinion, is to go with a GPS unit. I tried using a magnetic sensor on the drive axle of my baja bug, sending the signal pulses to an Autometer brand gauge. I never could get it to work properly. The tach signal kept interfering with the speedo signal. I even tried to use EFI shielded wire, separating the speedo wire from the tach wire, all to no avail. The GPS sender did the trick.

Speedo, maybe somebody make wireless signal. Mount a mechnical sensor in whole where you connect the wirer and then send wireless up to the meter? :)
