I already had a version for 4-pin HEI modules, but those modules are no longer manufactured the same and various manufacturers are using different designs so they are not predictable any more, as to what you will get.

The 7-pin modules are far more uniformly made, at least the half-dozen or so I've tested have been.
They can sometimes be had online for $10.

Using points to trigger an igniter prevents pitting and greatly increases the life of a set of points, almost indefinitely. (You still have to wipe them off and lube the cam etc., but they will not pit). It also eliminates the condenser. It gives a much more consistent spark especially compared to points that have some miles on them. But the biggest advantage, in my opinion, is that the adapter circuit allows for an automatic shut-off feature. This is when the circuit "times out" when it doesn't receive a points pulse for a certain amount of time (.5 to 2 seconds), it automatically discharges the coil, then it is set to wait for the next points pulse.

Here is the 7-pin version of using points to trigger an ignitor.

I will try to post actual Digikey part numbers on the diagram so parts gathering will be easier (Radio Shack used to be so convenient, but a thing of the past).

This project was part of the reason I took on a couple Kz400 projects this summer. Both bikes now start and run much smoother using old pitted points. Prior to using the HEI modules, I could file the points and get the bikes running fine for a awhile, but after just a few miles, the pit would rapidly degrade and the bike would stutter at higher RPMs.

Brilliant. Even an electrical clux could follow your guide.

Hope you don't mind but I posted a link on the GS website.

I have a Bill Hahn HEI distributor ignition for the Zed that uses the 4 pin module
Will this mod work with that ?

I'm not familiar with that ignition system. The 4-pin modules are still available so that is probably the best way to go.

The 7-pin does not have an internal dwell extension feature like the older 4-pin modules do because the 7-pin was made to be used with an ECM. The 4-pin unit was meant as a complete system. So if the distributor makes use of the dwell extension feature of the 4-pin module, the 7-pin module won't work correctly.
