Ignition Coil Replacement/Update

Hey y'all,

Bought a 78 KZ650 about a month ago and have been in the process of cleaning and updating some parts on it. I want to replace the ignition coils, as they're the kind where the spark plug wires are fused to the system. Can I swap them out with the coils from a '79 (I believe that's the coil system where the wires aren't welded to the coil, right?)? That seems the most logical and simplest to me. Thoughts?

I wouldn't buy used coils, especially old ones. You need to get ignition coils that are correct for your ignition system. Points ignition would need 4.0 ohm coils, while electronic ignition typically use 2.2 to 3.0 ohm coils. There are inexpensive aftermarket coils listed on eebbaayy. A couple of topics by loudhvx will have some specifics. My bike has the stock Kawasaki electronic ignition & I installed the green Dyna 3.0 ohm coils from Z1Enterprises.com.

Yea, good call! Was also thinking of switching from points to a Dyna electric ignition. I can replace both while I'm at it. I'll keep this in mind. Thanks!

If you are converting to Dyna ignition, just buy the whole kit at once from them, and you will have just what you need.
