Points / Breaker Cover
13 Jan 2019 09:43 - 13 Jan 2019 09:49
The stock part number for a KZ650 breaker / points cover is 1101-21035
However, Ive noticed a lot of KZ have this nice looking cover below which has a part number of 11012-1098
Will the latter fit on a 77 B1 KZ650?

Pretty much all of the ignition covers for Kz400-4, 500, 550, 650, 700, 750-4 will bolt onto any of those motors. The only difference I notice is that the ones designed to be used on electronic ignitions have a tiny bit more headroom to clear the advancer bolt. So later ones should easily bolt onto earlier points-motors without issue.

I would try polishing the stock engine covers using a polishing wheel & various compounds, maybe various clay bars. As for swapping covers, were you also planning to swap out the generator cover? Depending upon what generator/stator you have, it may not be that simple on a 77 650B. It would be weird to have mismatched engine covers. And just an FYI. If a motorcycle has the same engine cover gasket, then there's a good chance the cover will swap. For example the 90s 550/750 Zephyrs & later ZR7/ZR7S models use the same pulsing coil cover gasket, so one of those covers might fit as well.

The bike will end up looking like it survived a bad wreck. Upper case letters on the tank, upper/lower case letters on the points cover, black stripes on one cover, etc. Just polish the cover properly or pay someone to do it and it will look fine. Ed

Thanks Ed. I did decide even before reading this, to save money and just polish!
