KZ1000M very weak spark
10 Jul 2006 22:51
Hi Folks,
I recently removed almost all of my ignition components in order to test them before deciding what I needed to replace. I checked most of them to the specs in the Clymer manual and couldn't detect any obvious faults. I then put it all back together and charged the battery (battery measured 12.6 volts prior to hookup.) When I tried to start the bike I noticed a very weak spark at cylinder #4(this was the only plug I disconnected to check for spark). The spark was so weak that it wouldn't jump at the electrode but jumped from the side of the ceramic to the outside edge at the threaded end of the plug. The manual says that a weak spark might indicate a partial short in the secondary windings of the coil (these are stock OEM coils). Is it possible that both coils shorted out at the same time? I should add that prior to all this, the bike was running but the battery had run out of juice and I tried to charge the Batt without disconnecting the positive lead. Is it likely that I damaged the coils by doing this? Thanks in advance for your input.

I agree with the bad plug idea, it would also be a good idea to check the resistance of the spark plug caps.

Well, I gapped and installed new plugs and the bastard started right up--thanks guys. The problem now is that it will only run on choke and won't allow me to turn the choke all the way off. Any suggestions for this ailment?

Sure! Post a question about your choke issue in the carb forum.
