Is this what a fried connection looks like? What would cause this?

I'm currently working through replacing my single phase stator with a triple phase stator and replacing my regulator rectifier when I noticed the connection below. The left white/red wire is connected to the battery and the right white/red wire is connected to the reg/rec.

It appears to have been burned - am I correct? This might explain why the regulator rectifier was toast.

What would cause this? Should I be looking to replace something else in my electrical system?

Yes, that connection definitely overheated. There is a variety of possible reasons, but if the regulator was not limiting the current level that could be a cause. Ed

In addition to what 650ed indicated, a common problem is that female barrel connectors relax a little with age & heat, loosening grip on it's male mate.

Separate the connectors. Examine them for corrosion and carbon deposits from arcing, and clean the mating surfaces to show bright brass again. Then, before reassembly, gently squeeze the female connector so it's slightly more closed, which will tighten it's grip on the male pin.

We use NO-OX-ID electrical contact grease on all pin & blade connectors. It helps prevent corrosion, improves conductance and supplies more surface area for heat dispersion.

Age and dirt. The connections should be cleaned and dried, and try to tighten up the fitting if you can.

It depends upon how bad the damage is of course, but in some cases you may have to replace the terminals & sometimes the wire. That red-white power wire is kind of important.

I would suggest checking and cleaning your fuse connections too

Deoxit D-5 is another good choice for cleaning and protecting electrical contacts.

I used Deoxit-5 on (ALL) my connections 8 years ago after letting the bike sit for twenty years and have put over 50,000 miles on her since with zero electrical troubles related to the bikes wiring.
