Ignition problems
07 Jul 2018 06:41 - 07 Jul 2018 06:44
Question, I'm new to KZ's and I have a 1982 KZ750 LTD. Its basically a barn find, been sitting for 4 years. I rebuilt the starter and It works when cold, but no crank when hot. Figuring I have an open in the armature, so I'll need a new starter. But my main question is this.
I did get it running, but appears to only run on 2 out of 4 cylinders. Both right cylinders, numbers 3 and 4. Exhaust from right pipe was cool and exhaust pipes were cool. Plugs were wet. Would a bad ignitor cause this? If I understand this system correctly from my years as a mechanic, it is a wasted spark system. Each coil provides spark to two cylinders. One on the compression stroke and the other on the exhaust stroke. I would think that if it were a failed ignitor, I wouldn't have spark on paired cylinders. So if I have the firing order correct at 1243, then cylinders 1 and 4 would be paired and 2 and 3 would be paired. Is this correct thinking? If that thinking is correct, then wouldn't it be paired cylinders that are dead?
Thanks all!

You are correct - 1&4 are on one coil, 2&3 are on the other coil. Ed

More than likely you have some clogged carburetor passages, or possibly some valves with no lash.
Are you getting good spark on the dead cylinders? Bad secondary wires or bad plugs?

Unfortunately, I can't check spark as my freshly rebuilt starter has decided it doesn't want to play nice. Did just pull the carbs off and inspected them. Looked very clean inside, no gum build up. Looks like the previous owner ran the fuel dry before parking it.
