Need help on getting a spark
06 Jul 2018 22:12
So from my previous message I am trying to get this bike some life. So right now my main goal is to get a spark, but unfortunately I cant. I need your help guys on what to do and what to trace "electrical wise" to get that spark. I need to know what number do I put on the multimeter to check on the Ohms for continuity. I have the manual but its not the same as my multimeter.
For starters I got a new battery but after that I am not sure. Just want some step by step guide on what to check next and how to check them, weather using the multimeter for OHMs of Volts or the Light Check.
Motorcycle :
1978 Kawasaki KZ750 B
Thank you so much for the time in advance

You need to trace backwards from the coil live using a multimeter set to volts.
If you have coils with terminals on the back, check the volts to it by putting the live meter lead on and the neg to earth. If the reading is zero, move backwards and do the next terminal fron the loom to the coil lead. continue moving backwards i the loom u til you get a reading. When you do, you know the fault lies in the wiring/component you checked before you got a reading.
All this with the ignition switched on obviously.
If you do have power at the coil then you need to check the primary and secondary windings of the coil, if that checks out ok, move onto plug ht leads, plug caps, plugs.

Are you still able to get voltage results even if the motorcycle is not running ? just by turning it on?

Yes, the live to the coils should be live when the ignition is on regardless of if the points are open or closed.

Dirty points will prevent spark (oil, dirt, etc) Clean with a points file (fingernail file) and clean with a folded match book cover. If the points are pitted, it's the condenser that's bad. Heavy blue sparking at the points is the tip off.

Having taken a closer look at the points pic the gap looks suspiciously wide and I wonder if they are contacting when closed.

So good news....I got spark!!!YES thank you to all the post you provided, that helped me a lot on the things I need to focus on.
I changed the contact points and Ignition coils, for the ignition coils I was not getting any reading and for the contact points it was just dirty and corroded.
So now off to rebuilding the carb and making all the wires neat and clean before test start.
