I have a 77 1000, I have had it for 7 years. The last year or so it will be running fine and start right up and run for weeks on end then will just die. Upon the bike shutting down, the electrical will still be on, but I can not get it to turn over again. The first time this happened I let It sit for a couple months out of frustration. I put new plugs in it, even though the old ones were not that old, and soaked the filter cones in some gas and dried them out and it turned right over, only to shut down again weeks later. Please help and any guidance is appreciated.

Are you saying the bike quits or after you stop the engine it wont start again? If you're turning it off and then finding it wont turn over I'd look toward the starter connections, including solenoid and ground?

I would also have the battery load tested to insure that there is not a dead cell:

1982 KZ1000 LTD parts donor
1981 KZ1000 LTD awaiting resurrection
2000 ZRX1100 not ridden enough

I always understood "turn over" meant the crankshaft was rotating, as in being turned by the starter motor. But I think younger people, or people who didn't grow up around working on cars/bikes etc., incorrectly take it to mean firing on it's own, as in starting to run, as opposed to merely being turned over by the starter motor.

There is a big difference between the two meanings. So is the starter not turning the crank? Or is the crank turning, but the engine isn't firing?

“Turns over” is what you do with the kick starter, the starter motor, a wrench on the end of the crankshaft or any other means to turn the crankshaft over. Period.
