I used a car halogen sealed beam until I got my H4 and HID setup.

Here's what I use in my KZ650 (see link below). It is a direct, perfect fit and does not draw more current than the stock headlight, but it is much brighter than the original headlight because it is halogen. Also, it doesn't cost much and I have found it to be very reliable. The one in my bike now has been there for more than nine years without any problems. I've owned my 1977 KZ650 for a bit more than 40 years, and have used several different headlights; I HIGHLY recommend this one. Ed

Instead of a sealed beam, you can probably use the halogen headlight from an 80s model. Lens unit, H4 bulb & dust cover.
On my 81 650-CSR I replaced the stock sealed beam w the stuff from an 82 KZ750 Ltd. It was a direct swap.
From a quick check at Partzilla the 70s 650s have the same headlight ring part numbers as my csr, so it should work on your bike.
Get an H4 bulb of the same wattage as your stock bulb (not higher).
ps: the lens unit I got was cloudy from oxidation, so I cleaned it with denatured alcohol.
