Hey All,

I'm still working on this bike and can't seem to get things running right. She starts with choke on and cyl. 1 & 2 run rough and spit back through the carbs. Won't run without choke on. When I pull the plug wire while running I can hear a spark jump from cap to plug on all four cyl.

I thought it was the carbs all this time, but just checked the coil resistances and found a problem? Between primaries = 3.0 ohms Between primary and secondary = nothing Should be approx. 15,000 ohms, but nothing shows.

I removed all four park plug wires and tested them with caps = 5,000 ohms. I then tried all levels of ohm readings on my multi-meter and there is simply no reading between the primary and secondary on all four of the coils. When on the bike I get spark, what gives??? Thanks!

Yeah, all valve clearances are within spec and compression is 150 all around.

Two coils, yes? Each one supplies two spark plugs: 1 & 4 the other 2 & 3. There shouldn't be any electrical connection between the primary and the secondary. Open circuit. You should get between 13K and 15K ohms between the secondaries, just like you got 3.0 ohms between the two connections on the primary. Meaning remove the plug wires and measure the coil between the 1 and the 4 contacts on the coil and the 2 and 3.
Apologies if I misunderstood what you are saying.

Thanks, they're both at 11.5, so it looks like it's back to the carbs! Thanks for your time.

look for a vacuum leak. Perhaps the rubber engine/carb mounts.

Nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect.

Jakedude and Swest are pointing you in the right direction. Unmetered air or valves that aren't closing completely are the most likely sources of your backfire. If you shoot some starting fluid at the carb holders on the intake and the RPMs run up you have a leak. When you pull the cam cover, check cam timing, then valve clearances.

Hey Mates,

Yeah, I finally started really playing with the carb richness screw and, once I backed out 3.5 turns, everything sounds and runs good. Sorry for not doing the obvious in the beginning, but thanks for your time and expertise!
