I need a 20A main fuse and can't seem to find the model, of the fuse. Like 3AG or AGC. Doesn't anyone know what that size is called generically so I can source fuses at the local Parts stores? I appears to be shorter than AGC or 3AG fuses.

AGX fuses are 1 x 1/4". ..... metric is 25mm x 6.4mm. pretty sure.

AGC fuses are 1-1/4 x 14". .... metric = 30mm x 6.4mm

In the last year or so there were quite a few AGC & AGX fuses listed on amazon.com. not sure what's currently available. The auto parts stores around here don't have a very good selection of glass fuses, last time I checked anyway.

I found it at the local O'Reilly auto parts store. It is a AGW size 1/4 in by 7/8 in.

7/8" ? Is it the same length as the old one? and more importantly, is that L a good fit?
I know that the longer 30mm acc fuses don't really fit in the main fuse box. never tried a shorter AGW fuse.
The stock main fuses are 1" or 25mm. partzilla has a pic of the fuses next to a ruler.

On this KZ550 the fuses are all 7/8 inch long. I found a agx 20A in my drawer of fuses and it was too long. It would work but I didn't like the fit in that only a fraction of the contact "ends" contacted the fuse holder. You could also slide the fuse left or right and one end would not make contact at all. When I looked at the fuse holder cover, I noted it had two spare fuses. A 10 and a 20 amp. So I got the bike running on the spare. But that left me without a spare so the hunt for a fuse began.

FYI O'Reilly had an assortment of AGW fuses for $3.49 and I think one was a 20 as I remember. I'm going to check my KZ750 and KZ1100 to see what they use.

Always remove the negative cable from the battery when doing work on the electronics. I caused this search because I got lazy and didn't remove the neg cable when I was replacing the 6 pin connector, even though I knew it had a hot 12V wire even with the key off.

It's very strange that an AGX won't fit. now wondering if your fuse box is stock. ???

From eebbaayy photos the 550 shaft fuse box is different from most KZs, being a newer style w clear cover & more fuses.
But the diagrams at Kawasaki.com & partzilla indicate that they use the same fuses.

Partzilla is showing a photo of the 2005 KZ1000 police main fuse box which seems to be similar to the 550 shaft, and the diagrams list the fuse lengths as 25mm for the main fuse box & 30mm for the acc fuse box. same fuses as the earlier KZ models.

This particular bike has me confused a lot of times. Is it an 82? 83? It was build in 9/82 but titled as an 83. Bike bandit doesn't even list an 83 KZ550 shaft you have to look at 1982 to find a KZ550 Street. Mine has TK CV carbs but BB shows slides. I also can't seem to find the KZ550 shaft. BB shows it as a chain drive. KZ550C is the only listing I can find. But Partzilla shows an 83 KZ550 M1 LTD which closely resembles mine in every detail except the fuses. It calls for 26006 and 26006A which I think are AGX fuses because the picture of the part has it next to a ruler and it's 1 inch!

Trust me the fuse box bolts to the left side frame. It has a clear plastic cover with 5 fuses. Main, Headlight, Tail light, EXT 1, EXT 2 and a 10 and 20 amp spare. The fuses are all 7/8 inch long which I find is an AGW size fuse.

I chalk up these type of minor discrepancies to the factory using up old parts especially at the end of a model run.

Just like cars, a bike that is built in the latter part of a year is next year’s model and carries next year’s model year. Think of it this way - the 2018 car models will be available beginning in the fall of 2017. If manufacturers did not build cars and bikes earlier than January 1 they would have no inventory when the year began and wouldn’t be able to meet dealers’ requirements. So if your bike was built in September of 1982 it is in fact a 1983 model.

Regarding you not being able to find info on the 1983 KZ550 shaft drive bike you need to first be positive about your bike’s specific model. Since your bike is a 1983 KZ550 Shaft driven bike it is either a 1983 KZ550-M1 or a 1983 KZ550-F1 Spectre. Both the M1 and F1 used the same carbs and the same fuses.

If your bike is a KZ550-M1 the frame number stamped on the steering neck will begin with JKAKZFM1. (SEE www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Kawasaki_KZ550M ).

If your bike is a KZ550-F1 the frame number stamped on the steering neck will begin with JKAKZFF1.
(SEE www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Kawasaki_KZ550F ).

Mine is an M1. I verified it by the tag on the neck. Model KZ550-M1 stamped right on it. Doh!

Now just waiting for a petcock in the mail. Then ready for some serious test rides and a little fun! I'm ready to show off the new paint.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here, hee, but from the diagrams the M1 should use the same fuses as just about every other KZ known to man. Also from the diagrams the 550-F/M shaft drive models have the same fuse box. This is one of those cases where a good photo might shed some light. hee.

The part numbers you referenced are the diagram reference numbers, not the full part numbers. at partzilla click the part name to see the full part number. or if you log in, the part numbers are listed below the part name.

Once again you are correct sir. When I first attempted to replace the fuse I grabbed an AGC fuse which is actually 1.25 inches long. I thought it was an AGX but then I got my magnifying glass and found it was an AGC. AGX would work fine at 1 inch as the fuse I pulled out was actually 15/16 with no mark other than 20A.
