Correct Ohm rate for a KZ550 A2 coil was created by Gman58
Had a few spells of losing power suddenly while riding then having it come back within a few seconds. I was told more then likely it was due to old coils. Seen a lot of coils for sale but was unable to determine the actual Ohms I should be running on stock coils. Is there a big difference? I have seen coils supposedly to fit a 550, but some are 3ohms and others go up to 5ohms. I'm confused on which is best for my application.

what a bundle of information! I'll be going back here often. Unfortunately some of the specifics of the coil resistance required for a stock bike could not be found. And much of the technical information for figuring it out was way over my head. Was hoping someone just had a factory recommended resistance for that year. It's no where in the manual and plenty of vendors say they will fit but many of them have different resistance stats so it's difficult to tell what will work and what you might urn out first time trying them and blow $150 to $250. I found originals at Partzilla for $92 A piece, guess I will just go with that.

For $184.00 total you stated those stock coils are, can get some better coils like Accel or Dyna, including new spark plug wires.. Click on this link:

Thanks. Look nice but once again no resistance rating mentioned on the ad. I take it you have them on the GPZ? But my old base model A2 is nowhere near the performance level of yours and still running stock gears and engine.

In the links of my signature, you can get the various service manuals. You should grab all of them for completeness and in case of errors so you can compare them.

The coil info is in the "white" base manual under the 1980 supplement for the electronic ignition models. The "red" base manual has it, but unfortunately has it wrong. That is why I recommend having all of the manuals to compare info.

This is the correct specs for the 550 electronic ignition coils (from 1980 supplement of the "white" base manual).

The factory coils for the 81 Kz550A2 are nominally 2.3 ohm coils, but they might measure up to 2.7 ohms or higher if hot.

You can get 2.2 ohm dynas, or you can find coils on ebay that are exact replacements for the stock coils, but make sure to get the 2.3 ohm ones and not the 4-ohm ones (4 ohm coils would be for the points bikes, like the 80 Kz550A1). As Corey posted links to, you can also use 3 ohm Accel Supercoils or 3 ohm green Dyna coils, but they cost more.
