1981 kz550 help please! was created by Kev81550
Hey all! New to the forum and looking for some expertise. I recently purchased my first bike which was a 1981 kawasaki kz550 in the process of being bobbed. Here is my conundrum, the bike has a wiring issue due to the fact it is arcing (sp) the positive battery post. Im looking for a bare bones wiring diagram for the bike but im having a hard time knowing which diagram i need because the frame says 1980 kz550C series but the motor says Kz550A series. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Do i need to rewire the bike or is there a simple fix that would cause the arcing? And what diagram should i be looking for?

bare bones for mattylight. KZR topic by loudhvx. . see pages 11-21. There's a 550C wiring diagram on pg 16. also, see pg 21.
note: a bunch of the diagrams are no longer available. most from pages 1-10 are gone. But from pg 11-on many are still available.

For a manual & stock wiring diagrams. see links in loudhvx's signature in any of his replies.

CycleChaos.com has engine number & frame number info --->>> the 550C engine no. begins with KZ550AE.
Also, Kawasaki factory service manuals have a model application chart on the back cover & the beginning frame numbers are listed.
An 81 550 could have been mfg in 1980. or any 81 model for that matter.

As Martin said, the Kz550C motors are actually Kz550A motors.

The only difference relative to bare bones wiring, is if the official model year was 1980 Kz550C1 or 1981 Kz550C2. Both could have manufacturing dates in 1980 (also as Martin said).

1980 used a 1-phase charging system (two yellow wires on the stator and reg/rec).

1981 used a 3-phase charging system (three yellow wires on the stator and reg/rec).

1980 Kz550A models had points, but the 1980 Kz550C models had electronic ignition, even though the motors (both used Kz550A branded motors) are otherwise the same.
