Headlight not working. Does the 81 550 headlight come on with the ignition switch or when the engine starts? I know there was a time when they used to come on with the ignition key being turned and engine not running. I need to know so I can trouble shoot the connection.

In the USA the headlight is on when the ignition switch is on. For European models there is a headlight switch on the right handlebar control. You can see the castings for a Light swtich on some USA handlebar controls, but they aren't machined for the switch & in the wiring diagram the wires are spliced at the control housing.

There is a 10A fuse for the headlight. the fuse box is embossed with info. MAIN. HEAD. TAIL. plus wire colors.
KZRider loudvhx has manuals & wiring diagrams on his motorcycle stuff page. see links in his signature.

The 550's have a reserve lighting device. If the headlight fails the high beam comes on dimly. If it burns out you will have no light at all.
