Wires Only?

Hello All,

First, thank you for all the input on my first 2 post questions. Made for great improvements...

Both spark plug wires are beaten up and could use replacement. I can trace them under the tank but cant find anywhere in the manual that shows if JUST the wires can be replaced or do I have to replace the coils as well because they are attached permanently. I did read a few older posts but could find reference to anyone doing this. can I take off the tank and swap out the wires with new ones?

Thoughts please.

Phillip

What motorcycle is it? Most if not all 70s models & some from 1980 have the spark plug wires molded into the ignition coils, and I think all of them had points ignition.

edit: also the 81 305 which should have points ignition.

Some coils have wires that screw onto the coils. Those are easy to replace using 7mm copper core hi-tension spark plug lead wire. Some other coils have wires that are glued into the coils. Those wires can also be replaced but it's more work; you need to pull out the wire and/or dig it out of the coil using a pick tool. If you go this route you must be careful because there is a spike detail at the bottom of the passage and you need to avoid damaging that. For plug caps, you can get new NGK caps that screw onto the wires. A very doable project.

According to the diagrams at Partzilla the 81 305 has points ignition & the spark plug wires are molded into the coils & not removable.

Most models from 1981-on had electronic ignition with coils similar to those in Nessism's pic. also some 1980 models. But apparently not the 81 305.
