1981 KZ650 LED conversion
07 Jun 2017 18:59
Hey guys, been reading a bit and looking for this info but haven't had a solid answer so far. Few different questions.
First of all I'm switching to LED tail lights and turn signals. Where is the flasher relay located and does anyone know which one I will need?
Secondly my brake light is an LED bar and when I installed it it's staying lit solid and my brake light indicator is flashing repeatedly. Do I need a resistor or some sort of a ballast to make it work correctly?
Thanks.in advance!

The turn signal flasher is under the electro cover on the left side. It should be the one on the right.
The auto parts store should have an electronic flasher.
Novita. LL552 = long life light duty trailer flasher. EL12 = heavy duty trailer flasher. LF12 = 5x louder.
Here's a heavy duty trailer flasher from autozone. Made in USA. Novita. TridonĀ® EL12. Electro-mechanical flasher.
The brake light indicator is flashing because the checker unit probably senses the bulb is burned out.
You probably need to install a resistor but I have no idea what size.

Martin my man, thank you very much. Went and picked up the Novita 552 flasher relay and it works beautifully.
For the front LED turn signals the stock lights have 3 wires. Ground, running, and turn indicator. So I lost the running (red/blue) wire to get them to work. (For anyone's else's future reference) I don't mind losing the running lights though.
Also grabbed an LED resistor kit from AutoZone for 15$ I'll install it tomorrow evening and see if the indicator light quits flashing like mad.
Now I should probably figure out why gas falls out the bottom when I stand the bike up...

Will it pass inspection without the running lights? I'm not sure how carefully they would check that sort of thing on an old motorcycle.

I don't think I have to go get any inspections done here in Ohio. Haven't had to registered for a few years though so we'll see this week.
