KZ650 Running Lights was created by biker_smith
Hi all,
On my refurbishment of a KZ650 E1 LTD 1980 - when the ignition is on the lights are on - I get that since its a US and Canada bike only. But the front indicators are also on but not flashing.
Is that a standard feature of the bike for safety?
Thanks Paul.

The front turn signals also serve as running lights & hazards. The Fr turn signals are 2-wire plus each one has a ground wire.
The Fr turn signal bulbs have 2 filaments --- one for the running lights & one for the turn signals.
Ignition switch on -->> running lights on (but not flashing).
Turn signal on -->> running lights stay on & the bulb brightens as the turn signal filament flashes.
Hazards -->> same thing as turn signals, but of course all 4 turn signals flash at the same time.

Martin,
Thanks for that confirmation.
I've disconnected the front running lights as it could be confusing for UK drivers as they may think I'm indicating to turn.
Regards - Paul.

Just for information This isn't the normal configuration for turn signals in the UK ?? Cars do not operate that way?? From the front there is no lights but the headlight??
If all this is correct it amazes me, seems decades behind safety wise and can't believe I've never read about it....... Crazy

The UK law is pretty strange and seems to reduce rather than enhance the bike's visibility! I may be wrong, but believe the problem stems from their "Direction Indicators" requirement that states:
"Amber lamps located within the indicator lamp must not adversely affect the operation of the indicator i.e. the indicator must go on and off to function not dim and bright."
That wording which would in theory preclude front running lights from staying lighted when turn signals flash is shown in the link below. Very strange. Ed

Which then brings up the question, why aren't there rear running lights in the USA?

Disagree, we call indicators 'winkers' here for a reason. This is a convention any UK or EU motorist would know and expect. US style signalling used here would just create confusion.
