I broke my speedo

Hi, the bike, '83 KZ1100 Spectre. I had complained on here awhile ago about the speedo having a bouncy needle. I noticed when I wheeled the bike along I could hear the cable or speedo guts making a scraping sound that matched the needle bounce. I sprayed thin grease up into the speedo drive and into the cable end, this helped it some for awhile. Well last night I had to go on a longer freeway trip so I pegged the needle at it's dumb 85 mph limit for over 15 mins, was over 6000 rpm so I think that was around 100 mph. On the trip back the needle started bouncing even more to the point I couldn't read it. Well today it just quit reading anything, stuck at zero. So, best way to get it apart, do I have to uncrimp the outer metal band or?

Are you sure it is not a broken cable?

I'll bet it's the cable.

No it's not the cable, which is almost new and oiled.
Under further inspection, the needle jumped over the max speed limit post, so now is stuck under the zero speed post, under the back of it. Stupid 85 mph speedo. I would really like a 150 mph guts to this speedo, then this wouldn't happen again. Ok, I could keep the speed under 85, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon. Anyone know if I can transplant a 150 speedo internals into this Spectre housing?

Maybe consider aftermarket speedo? GPS or electronic?

Problems I've had over the past 77000 miles has always involved the angle drive. I believe that as the unit wears the worm gear tries to climb the bevel gear creating the jumpiness you see in the needle. In my case at least replacing the drive unit restored the needle to dead steady. ymmv.

Thanks for all. I will attempt to pull it apart, it's dead as is like this so no loss if I can't fix it.
Steve, in the other post you linked to, did you find the difference with the 85 and the 160 mph speedos was just spring tension? If that was the case, I found new 160 faces I think, and could just add that and change the spring and do a general rehab inside and hope that works.

Post a pic of what you have before you do anything.

Here you go Steve. Might be a bit of a problem as it has the neutral and high beam lights in it? I will pull it apart in the next night or two.
