Coded Ignition lock
07 Jan 2017 07:00
I see most, lose their original keys but I have the opposite problem.
I have the original and the code, but it looks like the tumblers and springs have fallen out at some point.
Is there a way to fix the existing lock cylinder, or find a replacement for the original key?
I would like to avoid changing all the other locks.

I'm a Locksmith, and key up locks 24/7.
Kawasaki ignitions, never.
We don't have any keying kits for the locks, so do not have tumblers/wafers and springs to choose from.
Good chance that your cylinder is too worn, which allowed the tumblers to fall out.
Try searching for an ignition by your key code # (z5001 ~z6000).
Another option is to get a different code ignition, swap tumblers around to match your key.
Disassembly of the ignition can be tricky, if at all possible, and then you would hope the ignition had similar tumblers as your original.
I think there are four depths/tumblers (1 to 4) in each cut position, I'd have to look that up, depending on your key code #.
Sometimes all that is different is the last cut.
If you give me your code #, I can check what other #s are close to using the same tumblers. Long shot finding one though.

[strike]I don't see why a locksmith couldn't do it. My local guy has been amazing, very easy to do business with, and very affordable. Good luck.[/strike]

KAWASAKI SWITCH-ASSY-ALL 1982-2005 KZ1000 27004-5179
... kind of expensive, but it is a NOS matching set. This is the only set I saw & not sure if it fits.

It is 27005-5019, and the bike is the KZ1100 A-2 1982.
The key is one of the lion head keys #Z5***.
Just the oem replacement is about a hundred bucks. been searching for a NOS but no luck with fleabay yet.

I had the head steering lock cylinder re-pinned on my Z1R by a local locksmith. It did not match the ignition, seat and helmet lock. As rstnick mentioned, it's not something your typical locksmith can/will do. The pins and springs are nothing like current residential, commercial or automotive locks. I was fortunate to find an old locksmith willing to try. He was able to look up the required pin length based on the key code and determined the pin diameter/head from the old pins. He machined new brass pins on a small lathe. It was not cheap or quick, but still easier than trying to find a set of all 4 matching locks. For what it's worth, he said the Kawasaki lock cylinders appeared almost identical to a vintage Maserati he did once.
