Removing headlight mount z500 -81

Hey guys

I'm in the middle of a first project build on my 1981 z500. I'm slowly turning it into a cafe racer and one of many things is to replace the headlight with a smaller unit. I'm having trouble finding any solid info on how to remove the actual headlight mounts. Am I right in thinking that to do so, I need to drop the fork? Just want to make sure before I take the bike apart more than I need to
