I have a 2000 Kzp with 18,000 miles on it. The bike is all original. Recently the motor seems to cut out and sputter around 1500-2000rpms( It doesn't do it if I baby it ). At first I thought it might be the carbs but if I rev it in neutral past 2000 rpms it seems fine. Next I thought it was the original 16 year old coils. Today I put a pair of Caltric coils in it and it wouldn't start at all. I put the original could back on and it still won't start. Im sure I'll figure out the not starting thing if I mess around with it but any ideas why it cuts out ? Thanks in advance.

Tested for spark? When was the last time the valves were adjusted?

Bad crank triggers, the little hall effect switches under the right side crank end cover - intermittent failures that get worse over time. Mine would run fine for a while, then two cylinders, back to four, then none...

Check for spark - pull all the leads and put in spare plugs grounded to the head and crank the engine...make sure the kill switch is at "run"....

No sparks, but coils test good and 12V power to the primary side... time to buy a Dyna S ignition, 3 ohm green coils, and wires....

Very easy -- and you can do it. The "Igniter" (a separate component usually found under a side cover) is no longer used with Dyna-S.

Am uncertain of the exact igniter at hand, but here are several examples to which it's probably similar:

Thanks for everyone's input. Its up and running like a top! Not sure what I did but I think the positive and negative wire on the left coil were reversed.
