Emgo Coils ?
28 Jun 2016 06:49
Even though my 77' KZ1000A that I'm now riding is running fairly decent for what it is, I was considering on replacing the stock coils and spark plug wires. Measured Both primary and secondary winding resistance's of the coils and got around 4.3 ohms and 24.5 Kohms respectively.
So they appear to be okay ? Only thing that I originally saw when I purchased this bike is that a couple of spark plug wires ( 3 & 4 ) were burnt on the outside of the rubber covering of the wires and the # 4 spark plug cap was broken ( cap replaced ).
So my question is, how does the Emgo 4 ohm replacement coils work that some venders are selling ? I'm still using the stock points. I wouldn't mind using other coils that would allow you to use different "colored" spark plug wires ( for that custom look ) then the ones that come with the Emgo coils and are permanent with these coils. Are there other coils that would work ?
Also, I'm considering converting over to the Dyna set-up but probably wouldn't be a good idea since I'm still using points ? Still trying to work all the bugs out of this bike.

I've heard good and bad about Emgo coils. I've used stock coils for the last 30-40 years. I have later model coils with replaceable HT wires. 4ohm. They were used when I got them, found a deal on Dyna 3ohm coils so I bought them. I have a Dyna S. Works great but I carry my points plate and cam just in case. Dyna S is three years old and still going strong. The old rotor got sloppy and I ordered a new one from them. $25.

Steve, Is there a 4 ohm coil that would allow me to use other spark plug wires ? Like to use maybe Red spark plug wires since I just purchased NGK Red spark plug caps. Or is the ohm resistance of the coils important to where they need to be rated at 4 ohms to work with the stock points ?

You can get Dyna 4 ohm coils or buy late model KZ coils. Used is a crap shoot.

Here's a page from Z1E. What kind of caps do you have? If screw on you need copper wire HT lines.

I thought you Need 4 ohm coils to work with the stock points ?
My NGk spark plug caps are the screw-in type I believe YBO5F-R ( 8162 Red )
Can you Buy these HT lines in colors and bulk ?

The Z1's came with 5 ohm coils. 3 will work and the Dyna will work with all of them. I don't know about the colored wires.

Steve, My bike is a KZ1000A or does that make a difference in the coil rating ?
Eventually I would like to go with the Dyna S set-up, but if I purchase the Dyna 3 ohm coils would it be to hot for my points and burn them up ?

They're a little hot but shouldn't be a problem. You could call them and ask.
