Ignition for81 KZ1000J

Hello gang, wonder if some of you have some recommendations for me here. It seems I have a bit of an ignition issue with my 1981 KZ1000J.

It has been recommended that I purchase a Dyna S ignition system. Does anyone have any experience with this and and suggestions? Should I change out Coils and ignition complete? The bike is primarily stock with a Hindle Header and has been rejetted.

I have the Dyna and 3 OHM coils. Works great. If yours is a electronic ignition, you will have to change coils too.

Yes mine is electronic ignition - my mechanic is saying go NOS OEM....not aftermarket coils....did you go with Dyna Coils?

I had stock coils. Got a good deal for the 3 OHM Dyna's. Good thing about this set up is, parts are available.

The stock electronic ignition is very reliable. And it draws fewer amps than a Dyna.

I'd guess the weak link is the stock coils. you can probably use either the grey Dyna 2.2 ohm or the green 3.0 ohm. I think the 2.2 ohm are supposed to be a better match for the stock igniter. Accel is another brand. or possibly the coils from a Buick Grand National (source = elr658 over at kaw.mc.org. he's one of the more knowledgeable Kaw guys outside of KZR).

by elr658: my very fast KZ1000R1 has Grand National coils as does my fast cb1100 as does my slow 79 cb750f.
