wiring areg/rec was created by rlcarter
hello everyone... havent been here for awhile.. got a question about wiring a new reg/rec . i have a 1980 kz1000G . i contacted oregon motorcycle parts about a new one. the one they suggested has 5 wires. mine has 6. three yellow a blk a whiite and a brown. the brown goes to the computer and the throttle switch .i have done away with the computer so my question is will this work without the brown wire.
thought i should ask before doing it.

The brown wire on the stock unit acts as a voltage sensor so that the reg-rec knows when to stop charging the battery.
The 5-wire unit from oregon mc may have circuitry that eliminates the need for the sensor wire. just make sure the brown wire from the wire harness is secure (it's hot when the ignition switch is turned on).

Alternative reg-rec (credit to loudhvx). you might be able to use the voltage regulator from a Ninja 500 or Vulcan 500 up to around 2009. From the x-ref at partzilla the 1000-G1 has the same r/r as my 650. I installed one from a low mileage 2007 EX500. the connector was reversed, so I had to install new pins & new connector as the old stock connector crumbled.

martin_csr... thanks for the info. you are right . i did some more reading on the reg/rec from oregon and it does sense the voltage internally instead of useing the brown wire. the sun is shining and its 74 degrees B)

If getting the one from oreg mc, you could keep the brown wire routed into the wiring harness connector. That way it will be secure & have no chance of shorting on the frame or something. With the new 5-wire reg-rec, the brown wire would be unused & not connected to anything. just make sure the wire colors line up correctly, of course. You probably already realize this or would have figured it out. just thought I'd mention it.

yeah the brown wire wil get secured away. the new reg/rec has no brown wire just the 3 yellow , a blk for gnd. and a red for hot...it should work out fine ...appreciate the help.
