GPZ550 Coils vs Z500 was created by razmo99
Just wondering if GPZ550 coils would work in a Z500 with a stock electronic ignition?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationShould be exactly the same I think. We don't have the 500 here, so I've never compared the part numbers. I don't even know if the Kawasaki U.S. site has the parts section fully restored.

But you really don't want 30 year old coils unless they have super low miles with no cracks at all.

My friend put these on his Kz550 standard last summer and they worked great. He just had to go to a parts store and buy some suppression wires. These look almost the same as the stock coils, but they use 8mm wires instead of 7mm.

One coil costs $50, but he has a 30% deal where the second coil costs $35.

I don't what the shipping would be though.

Lou, the z500 was the first, then z550 then gpz550 twinshocks came shortly after.

If you haver an old 81-82 gpz ignition with the finned ignitor unit (2 x 4 block connectors) with a mechanical timing advance ATU then
they should be a swap.

If you had the earlier points ignition I think the primary resistance might be a bit different. If you have later zx GPz coils with the electronic advance ignitior you might want to check this.

1980 Gpz550 D1, 1981 GPz550 D1. 1982 GPz750R1. 1983 z1000R R2. all four aces

Yes, but since he has a 500 B4, that would likely be a 1982 model, and most likely has the same ignition as the 81-83 gpz 550.

The coils should be the same for all gpz's, including the ZX550's, so the coils should be swappable. But I still think it would be better to get new coils, as in the link I posted rather than 30 year old used coils.

I had saw those coils you linked lou but the shipping is what put me off. I was thinking of getting these

Those look to be the same ones I linked to, which are not factory coils, but seem to work well. That listing is specifically for the Zx550A model Gpz, which uses electronic advance, but the coils are basically the same as the earlier, mech-advance. electronic ignition coils.

There doesn't seem to be a description on the resistance of the coils. It would also be nice to get a measurement between the mounting holes. I would just ask the seller those two questions to confirm it will work.

The resistance should be 2.1 to 2.5 ohms.
Somewhere I had a measurement for the mounting holes, but I can't seem to find it now.

We had to make wires using an 8mm Accel kit. The rubber grommet for the wire is very small and is very difficult to put onto the wire directly. So we clamped a, allen head bolt horizontally in a vise, with the head sticking out. We used one with an 8.5mm head, then dielectric greased it, then pressed the grommet onto the shaft, then pressed the wire up against the shaft and transfer the grommet to the wire. Very easy that way.
