79 kz400 headlight and tailight

does the bike need to be running for the headlight and tail light to work. I stripped the bike to convert to a cafe and now I have Tach lights, A brake light but no headlight, taillight, speedo light, or horn. I know some of the newer bikes have most electronics running off of the alternator but im not sure about this one ??

I would just start the bike but my carbs are at the shop for re-jetting.

Please Help.

Lights should be on when the key is in the on position.

Thank you very much. I got it all fixed today.
Seems I didn't wire the new ignition switch up correctly.
All the electronics work.

Now if only I could the front brakes working I would be all set
