Reserve lighting unit 1981 gpz550

I had a headlight problem where the low beam was very very low and the high beam wasn't much better. Long story short there was a broken connection coming from the reserve lighting unit harness.

What purpose does the "reserve lighting unit" serve? Is it a battery or what?
