Hello forum,

My dad and brothers and I are working on a project 77 kz1000 LTD that he picked up for cheap and has been sitting in the garage for the last 2 years or so. We are doing a few chassis, engine and cosmetic upgrades. One of the things we'd also like to change is the electrical and wiring. We would like to upgrade the left and right control switches, fuse block, starter solenoid and accompanying components.
Is there any issue in doing this?
We plan on doing this properly with the correct wire terminals/crimps to accommodate the upgrades so it will connect to the stock wiring harness.
Looking for any and all help/information.

I'm in the process of doing pretty much the same thing to my Gpz project...newer controls, Mosfet R/R from a Zx10, newer blade style fuse box, modern Suzuki starter solenoid, etc. I want everything to look and act as factory and have ended up pretty much disassembling the factory wiring harness and making my own. I'm not saying not to attempt it but I personally found it to be a deep, deep rabbit hole.

Looks like its coming along nicely.
We are getting a good condition stock harness and modifying it for our application, so similar to you here. Thanks for the info though and its good to see somebody else in the same boat. I don't like being the pioneer, ha.
Anyways, I forgot about the R/R so what year zx10 did you get yours from? is there any that will not work? there is a budget to this from what my dad keeps telling us, haha.

Z1E has all new harness for about $160 ship.
I have purchased two sets from them .
One for my 76 kz900 and 77kz1000.
As for the hand controls...you can't find Repo for your model especially if your hazard control is on the left control.

Thanks for the information.
Good to know about the harnesses as we need a stock one to modify as the current one seems to have been in some type of electrical fire and is pretty mutilated by the previous owner(s).

Update:
Scored a very good deal on a good, used OEM harness on ebay.
Getting the electrical underway since the engine is going out soon and the frame/etc just came back from powder coat.
Going to source a new starter motor, update to modern starter relay, update to reg/rect. unit, update thumb switches, remove all unnecessary things from the electrical system, update fuse block, LED turn signals and proper relay, integrated rear light, modern horn.

Hoping to have all this finished up by June.
Using varying connectors from cycleterminal.com (they have been great for me in the past with projects like this)
