It has my experience that the mechanical drives started to go bad at around 40000 miles. The tach. and speedometer both returned to dead steady when I replaced the drive on each one. These are still available oem parts but not cheap.

Digital LCD Motorcycle Odometer Speedometer Tachometer Gauge RPM 0-15000

I guess the speed sensor can be retrofitted to a KZ with mechanical speedo drive. ???
