kz750-4cyl regulator/rectifier mounting
29 Dec 2015 08:52
I recently installed a replacement main wiring harness on my 82 kz750 ltd. I've got most of the harness routing figured out. Most of the original harness was hacked up and nothing was mounted correctly, so I had nothing to go on.
I cant figure out which way the regulator is supposed to be mounted under the battery tray. Do the wires face the front or rear of the bike?

Probably towards the front. That's the way it is on my 81 650-CSR which has the same frame & battery case.
Also, my bike has a wire clamp/guide attached to the right side reg-rec mounting bolt.
1981 KZ650-CSR. Right side. Voltage regulator & its connector.
I have since installed a 2007 Ninja 500 R/R & new connector w protective cover (the one in the pic crumbled).

Thanks. I actually found that picture last night on google images. The 750 has an additional bracket under the tray for the warning light self checker and the reserve lighting device that mounts on the right side. I guess it doesn't matter which way it goes as long as I keep the wiring away from the chain. I'll try both ways and see which one works best. Judging by the clearance from the regulator to the rear splash should, it looks like it has to go forward.
This bike has way too much wiring! I might try to eliminate some of the "extra" stuff like the reserve lighting device, turn signal canceling, and the self checker. I probably should have got a 650 wiring harness instead.

One man's "too much" is another's desire...which is my way of saying I wish my 750E had self canceling turn signals.

+1
I've owned my KZ650-C1 for more than 38 years and sometimes I still forget to turn off my turn signals. Maybe in another 30 or 40 years I'll stop forgetting them.  Ed

29 Dec 2015 14:25Very true! My Ducati has self canceling signals, but it takes forever for them to cancel. I guess I've become accustomed to canceling them on my own. I've never used it on the KZ, so I'm not sure if the system even works or how long it takes to cancel.Nessism wrote: One man's "too much" is another's desire...which is my way of saying I wish my 750E had self canceling turn signals.

It's not too hard to add a timeout to the turn signals. I've made my own for years, but there must be someone making a signal flasher that cancels after a minute.
Some of the KZ's had a really sophisticated one that worked on time and distance. But the turn signal switch on the handlebars was huge because it used a big solenoid to physically move the switch back to the center position. It was pretty goofy looking and probably overkill.
I find 30 to 45 seconds is just about perfect for the city where most lights are a short cycle. Out in the rural areas, you'd probably want a minute or so.
