Msd 6al

This is for the drag racer's and hot street bike guys.
I got an msd 6al off eBay but didn't get a wiring diagram for it. Looked on msd Web site for one, but couldn't find it for a 4cyl motorcycle.
I'm running a dyna so with accel coils on a 1980 kz1000 with some mods.
Does anyone have a similar set up,diagram or pictures?
I thank you in advance for the help.
Happy new year to all.

It will be interesting to see how the unit works on your bike once you get things sorted. The normal KZ engine ignition system works much like a 2 cylinder engine. Since it uses the "wasted spark" approach it doesn't have four individual firing events. Instead, it has two firing events, and each one controls a coil that fires two plugs simultaneously.

The MSD website states that the MSD 6AL can be used on 4, 6, or 8 cylinder engines, but doesn't give details as to whether that includes engines that utilize a wasted spark system. If no one on this site offers advice based upon hands-on experience, I suggest you contact MSD and ask how to set it up. Ed

The MSD 6A-L is an automotive type ign. I've used them alot on drag car''s but never a bike
and I'm not sure if you can.

IMHO the best bang for the buck if you want a drag race type ign. system is the Dnya 2000
with the promgraming software.
1980 KZ650 F1
ZX750A1 motor.
Wiseco 810cc kit.
Zukiworks racing ported head.
VM 29 smooth bore's.
Dyna 2000 Ign. w/Dyna mini coil's
APE cylinder stud's and nut's.
APE valve spring's.
APE Track King clutch.
V/H KZ1000 sidewinder.
3.5x18 laced to a KZ1000 disk hub.
150/60/18 Shinko 006 Podium.
63" wheel base.

The MSD is only going to be able to drive one coil, correct? You would need two of them, and they would have to be set up for two-cylinders each.

What's wrong with the Dyna S? That probably has as good a spark as you would ever need on a stock or slightly modified KZ motor. (You didn't mention if your motor has much higher compression than stock).

The MSD is for when you need really high RPM on a car, or have really high compression or boost. It's kind of overkill on a stock KZ, and probably only has downsides (if you could even use it, which is likely not the case).

Your signature says you are looking to have a Dyna2000 in the future. That is probably what you really need (for a rev limiter and advance control etc.)

It's an older version 6al. It looks made for a motorcycle by the looks of the connections. I'll get a pic tomorrow.
Thanks for the feedback.

Well I found a pic but it won't let me load it. I have no idea why??
It is a msd 6al motorcycle ignition box with a 2 step module plugged into it.
Again thanks for the feedback.

May be you can take a look at C5 motorcycle ignitions. Optical driven, multispark at al RPM range, programmable ignition advance, etc.
